Beginner martial arts

Starting something new can feel a little nerve-wracking—but that’s totally normal! Whether you’re walking into a dojang (martial arts studio) for the very first time or simply curious about signing up, understanding what to expect can go a long way in calming those first-time jitters. If you’ve been thinking about beginner martial arts, this guide will walk you through what your first class might look like and how to feel more confident from the moment you step on the mat.

Once you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by a friendly instructor or team member. At Choe’s HapKiDo, we make it a priority to greet new students with warmth and respect. Expect a quick tour, time to ask questions, and guidance on where to put your shoes, belongings, and where to wait until class begins.

We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to your first class. This gives you plenty of time to meet the instructors, look around the facility, and start getting comfortable in your new training space. It also helps make sure you’re ready to go when class begins—without feeling rushed.

Most beginner martial arts programs, like ours, are set up to make sure newcomers feel included and never left to figure things out alone.

If you don’t have a uniform yet, don’t worry! Comfortable workout clothes like a T-shirt and sweatpants or leggings are perfectly fine. Many beginner martial arts students start this way before receiving their official uniform (often called a dobok). Once you earn your uniform, it becomes a source of pride—it represents your commitment and growth!

Also, no shoes or socks are allowed on the training mats. We train barefoot. Not only does this keep the mats clean and safe for everyone, but training barefoot is also rooted in ancient martial arts traditions. It helps improve balance, body awareness, and coordination—plus, it strengthens the muscles in your feet and ankles over time. Going barefoot connects students more closely to the training experience and enhances overall technique.

Most beginner martial arts classes follow a similar flow, even though the drills and themes vary day to day. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Warm-Up – Classes begin with a mix of stretching and a full-body blast. Expect light cardio, strength training, and exercises to get your muscles moving and your mind focused.
  2. Basic Kicking and Punching – You’ll learn belt-level kicks and punches as a group on the mat. This is where you begin building the foundation of your martial arts technique.
  3. Target Kicking – Here, you’ll often work with a partner to practice precision and control while kicking targets or paddles.
  4. Additional Sections – These vary by day. You might work on rolling and flipping, self-defense, sparring, or board breaking techniques, or weapons skills.

Every class is different, but the structure is pretty consistent—so you’ll always know what to expect while still staying challenged and excited. The fun never stops, and we’ll definitely keep you on your toes! Whether it’s mastering a new kick, trying out a new drill, or teaming up with someone new, our martial arts classes are designed to keep things fresh and motivating. No one expects perfection. Everyone starts as a beginner. Just show up and do your best!

One of the first things people notice in a beginner martial arts class is the energy. It’s a unique mix of focus, fun, encouragement, and empowerment. Instructors and fellow students are there to help—not judge. At Choe’s HapKiDo, we believe martial arts should challenge you and cheer you on at the same time.

It’s okay to not know what to do right away. Ask questions, listen closely, and observe others. Everyone was new once, and the martial arts community is usually more than happy to help you along the way.
